When God Doesn’t Like Your Good Deeds

This past Sunday, we defined confessing our sin as confessing the action of our sin and the distrust of Jesus behind the sinful action. We trust something in this world to offer what only God offers in Jesus alone.

But we do good deeds without trusting in Jesus, as well. This is just as sinful as “bad” deeds.

When we act “good” to get our way or to look better to others, God is utterly displeased. The Pharisees are the classic example of this in the Gospels. Jesus called them “whitewashed tombs” (Matthew 23:27) because though their visible actions appeared pure and clean, they came from sinful motives that lead to eternal death.

This shows the importance of identifying the reason for our actions, as well as the actions themselves. God is pleased by our life when the root of our obedience is trust that God is the one working in us (Philippians 1:6) by the power of the Holy Spirit (Galatians 6:22-23), for his glory alone (Matthew 5:16).

P.S.: If your curious, check out the old Transformers theme song, that I talked about. It seemed a lot cooler when I was 7.
