God does not help those who help themselves. God helps us because we can’t help ourselves. We can’t help ourselves because our sin makes it impossible.
Our sin doesn’t make us spiritually sick, it renders us spiritually dead. Sick people can walk to the medicine cabinet, dead people can’t.
Our sin doesn’t strain our relationship with God, it breaks it. We could approach God on our own if it was merely strained, but since our relationship is broken, he must approach to us.
The way he raises us from the dead and enters into a relationship with us is through our faith in what Jesus did (not trusting what we do), in the power the Spirit provides (not the strength we muster up ourselves).
